The Importance of Checking In

I felt awful—sore, achy, exhausted. My face was breaking out, and I felt so puffy I might as well have been the Michelin Man. No energy to start the day, just completely drained.

I blamed it on mom life—three kids four and under, breastfeeding an eight-month-old, constantly on the go, running two businesses. Of course, I was exhausted. But deep down, I knew I needed to check in with myself.

Was I doing everything I could to support my body? Or was I contributing to the problem?

Because if I was the problem… I could also be the solution.

Listening to My Body

I’ve been dealing with chronic urticaria (hives from everything—fun, right?). My diet was still gluten-, soy-, and MSG-free, but I’d been sneaking in a little lactose-free dairy and experimenting with naturally smoked bacon.

And when I really paid attention, my body was screaming at me: I don’t like what you’re doing to me!

So, I decided to go Paleo (minus tomatoes, plus potatoes) and see if it helped.

What is Paleo?

The Paleo diet eliminates grains, refined sugar, dairy, and legumes, focusing instead on whole foods like:

  • Meat
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Nuts
  • Healthy oils (olive, avocado, coconut)

No macro counting, just eating food that—hypothetically—a caveman could have found.

Four Days In…

Already, I have more color in my face, more energy, less puffiness. My mind feels clearer, and I feel hopeful. My whole body seems less inflamed.

And that’s the thing—my body isn’t crazy. It’s actually very sane for rejecting processed food. Inflammation has been the root of all my struggles, and now I’m giving my body a chance to heal.

Check In With Yourself

This is your reminder: if you’re not feeling your best, ask yourself why. You might already know the answer, and if you don’t, reach out to someone who can help.

And if your doctor doesn’t have the answer? Find a good naturopath and get a second opinion.

You deserve to feel good. Your body wants to heal—you just have to help it.

So, how are you feeling? And when was the last time you checked in?
