Can Your Kitchen Have Gluten and Be Gluten Free?

I understand. You are gluten free. You have other family members who are not… but is it truly possible to be gluten free in a kitchen that still has gluten in it?

Honestly… I’m going to have to say no. Gluten is such a stubborn protein! For anyone who is cross contamination sensitive, we understand the hazards of eating out. Even the most well meaning kitchen will inevitably cross contaminate you at some point and you will have the awful feeling of regret that lingers long after the convenience factor of dining out.

When you try to maintain a gluten free diet in a kitchen that still contains gluten containing food you will always have dangers to contend with. Shared kitchen tools, shared food storage spaces, shared meal prep spaces. When all it takes is a crumb, its easy to see where there could be sacrifices made to your health.

Is having a gluten free kitchen an adjustment? Yes.

Is it worth it? Yes.

If there is any place that you should never be worried about falling ill from cross contamination it is your own kitchen. Your kitchen should be a safe place for you to eat.

What are some ways to make this transition a little easier? Focus on having naturally gluten free foods in your kitchen rather than ‘gluten free replacements’. This will keep the meals on a budget and can be enjoyed by anyone.

Go through your kitchen once thoroughly to take out all the gluten containing products, replace all of the kitchen tools that may be hidden sources of gluten, and clean all spaces thoroughly from the top down.

Some of the spaces gluten may hide could surprise you… plastics, nonstick, wood, in your cutlery drawer, and even in shared dishcloths. (Did I mention the protein is stubborn?)

Why not make your kitchen a safe haven for everyone in your family?
