What’s better to warm the belly than a nice chili? This easy, no fuss recipe can be made on the stovetop, slow cooker or pressure cooker.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs lean ground beef
- 1 large onion diced
- 2 cloves garlic pressed
- 1 tsp cumin
- 2 tbsp chili powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp oregano
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 can kidney or black beans (540ml), drained and rinsed
- 1 can diced tomatoes (796ml), with juice
- 2 cans (398 ml each) tomato sauce
- Add in : 1 tbsp cocoa powder
Directions
- Brown your ground beef, onion, and garlic in a skillet. Drain if needed
- Add to slow cooker with spices, beans, tomatoes and tomato sauce.
- Cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours.
- Before serving, stir in 1 tbsp of cocoa powder
Tips
- Prepare this the night before and refrigerate so you can put it on the slow cooker in the morning.
- Skip the slow cooker, but get all of the same slow cooked flavour by using a pressure cooker. 30 minutes in the pressure cooker will yield the ‘all day slow cooked’ flavour.
- You could make this on stovetop as well. Brown your meat, onion, and garlic, then all add other ingredients and bring to a simmer. Turn to low and cook for 30-40 minutes. Stir in cocoa before serving. It’ll always taste better the longer you cook it.
- Always read ingredient labels for seasonings and for beans. Beans can be a ‘sneaky’ hidden source of gluten. If you can find canned beans marked as gluten free that is always the best option.
