Philly Steak Sub

Bear in mind these are Philly Steak Subs made by a gluten free gal in Nova Scotia, Canada. If you’re looking for authenticity seek it elsewhere, but this’ll still make for a delicious and simple meal solution.

Ingredients:

  • 4 gluten free buns of choice (sub bun, hot dog, or hamburger)
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 lb steak of choice (cut into strips)
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 1  onion
  • 1/2 cup GF BBQ sauce of choice
  • 4-8 slices of swiss cheese, or cheese of choice
  • Side dish of choice : Garden salad, steamed veggies, roasted potatoes, raw veggies and dip

Directions:

  1. Heat skillet over medium heat with 1 tbsp oil
  2. Add sliced beef, bell pepper, and onion to the skillet
  3. Cook until done to your satisfaction
  4. Add BBQ sauce and stir together
  5. Divide between buns
  6. Top with cheese
  7. Leave open faced and under broiler for a couple minutes to melt the cheese and toast the bun

Tips:

  • Want a little extra flavour? Add garlic butter to each side of your bun before topping and toasting
  • Always read BBQ sauce ingredients! Gluten is very commonly added to BBQ sauces. Find a favourite safe brand (or one marked gluten free) and go for it.
  • When gluten free the shape of the bun matters less than the texture. I enjoy Promise brand buns, and they are readily available at many grocery stores.
