Can I share one of my absolute favourite gluten free hacks for the summer? Picnics! 

There are so many opportunities in the summer for low cost local exploration. The cost of day trips goes up substantially when you have to factor food into the cost.

Eating out can be risky when you’re gluten free, extra costly, while also being less satisfying. Eating out is way more stressful with food restrictions.

Why not pack a bag, throw in a few ice packs, and enjoy a picnic while you explore?

You’ll save money, avoid cross contamination, and make memories forever. Plus you get the fun of finding a beautiful new place to picnic every time. 

It doesn’t have to be complicated!

Favourite foods for picnics :

• Tortilla Chips & Dip – hummus, guacamole, or roasted red pepper, etc.
• Chips
• Made good bars
• Fruit
• Egg salad or chicken salad sandwiches
• Chicken Caesar salad
• Nuts
• Popcorn
• Fried Chicken
• Potato Salad
• Sweet Broccoli Salad

Favourite picnic accessories : 

• Picnic basket – it comes with utensils, plates, cups, a blanket (which also helps you avoid cross contamination on a picnic table), and insulated place to store food, and also adds to the fun.
• On the go serving bowl – these bowls keep food either hot or cold since they’re insulated and give peace of mind. Perfect for travelling with lettuce to mix with dressing after. If I know its going to be a long while, sometimes I throw a cold pack in with the lettuce just to make sure everything stays fresh.
• Ice Packs – because we want to keep stuff cool

This has nothing to do with food, and everything to do with adventure : check your local area for passes!

We bought a one year pass to Nova Scotia Museums. All summer we choose a museum as a destination to explore (with 28 museums included there’s a lot of options), enjoy free admission, and then have a picnic lunch while we’re there. We get to explore the province, and all it costs is the price of gas. Its a fun an cost effective way to create memories.

We also have a seasons pass to the Wildlife Park nearby.
